Greenhouse Design Guide for Saudi Arabia and Middle East Hot Climate Farms
Building a greenhouse in Saudi Arabia or other Middle East markets is different from building one in a mild climate. The main challenge is not only high temperature, but also strong sunlight, dry air, dust, water quality and daily operating cost. Buyers should treat the greenhouse as a complete climate system instead of only a steel structure with covering material.
The first decision is greenhouse type. For many commercial vegetable farms, a multi-span film greenhouse can be a practical choice because it offers good cost control and fast installation. For higher automation projects, glass greenhouse or polycarbonate greenhouse may also be considered. The structure should be designed according to local wind load, project size and long-term maintenance plan.
Cooling is usually the most important system. In hot and dry areas, cooling pad and exhaust fan systems are widely used because evaporative cooling can reduce the inside temperature when water quality and airflow are managed correctly. Roof ventilation, side ventilation and circulation fans can also help air movement. The design should calculate fan capacity, cooling pad area and greenhouse length together, instead of buying equipment separately.
Shading is another key point. External shading can block part of the sunlight before it enters the greenhouse, while internal shading can help manage light and crop stress. The shade rate should match crop type. Tomato, cucumber, leafy vegetables and flowers may need different light conditions.
Water and irrigation planning should be discussed early. In some Middle East farms, water salinity or mineral content can affect irrigation equipment, cooling pads and crop roots. Filtration, water treatment and fertigation systems may be needed for stable production. Drip irrigation is common for soil or substrate cultivation, while hydroponic systems need more accurate nutrient control.
Crop selection also affects greenhouse design. Tomato and cucumber projects usually require stronger trellising and good humidity control. Leafy vegetables may use hydroponic NFT channels or other growing systems. Nursery and flower projects may need different bench layouts and light management.
Before requesting a quotation, buyers should prepare project location, greenhouse area, crop type, local summer temperature, humidity, water source, wind condition and expected automation level. With these details, NSR Greenhouse can suggest suitable greenhouse structure, cooling, shading and irrigation systems for Saudi Arabia and Middle East farm projects.
