Plastic Film Greenhouse Buying Guide for Vegetable Farms

Why many vegetable farms choose film greenhouses

Plastic film greenhouses are widely used for tomato, cucumber, pepper, leafy vegetables and seedling production. They offer a good balance between cost, growing performance and project flexibility.

For buyers building their first commercial greenhouse, the key is to select the right structure and supporting systems, not simply the lowest price.

Single-span or multi-span

Single-span tunnel greenhouses are simple and economical. They are suitable for smaller farms, seasonal production or regions where growers need a fast installation solution. Multi-span film greenhouses provide better land use, internal working space and system integration for commercial farms.

If the project will include hydroponics, cooling pads, internal shading or automation, a multi-span design is usually easier to manage.

Film quality and covering layers

Greenhouse film should be selected according to UV resistance, thickness, light transmission, anti-drip performance and local wind conditions. In colder regions, double-layer inflated film can improve insulation and reduce heat loss.

In hot regions, film selection should be considered together with shading and ventilation, because covering material alone cannot solve heat stress.

Ventilation and cooling

Roof vents, side vents, roll-up film, exhaust fans and cooling pads are common options. For tomato and cucumber farms, good ventilation helps control humidity and reduce disease pressure. In hot climates, fan and pad cooling may be needed during peak summer.

Irrigation and crop layout

Drip irrigation, fertilizer injectors, substrate gutters and ground cover can improve water use and crop management. The greenhouse layout should leave space for workers, carts, water tanks and maintenance.
